How to add a section

To be able to separate a section from the main part, we must use the Break function in Word. Break function allows us to divide a Word document into several separate sections called Section. Then apply each section to the desired changes.

To create a new section, you should click at the bottom of the last page of the section the word flashing cursor will appear there.  Our document is introduction in this article, so we should click on the last page of the introduction and after the last word.

Now, go to the Page Layout tab then Page Setup box, click the Breaks to display the corresponding menu.

Click Next Page in the option Section Breaks. By clicking, the flashing cursor will go to the next page, which means the new section has been created.

Page numbering

Now it’s time to do the settings to enter the number of pages. As you’ve seen in the previous step, with the steps mentioned, we divided the Word file into two sections. For page numbering, click on the first part of the first section to display the flashing cursor of the word. Then click on the Page Number. Then click Format Page Numbers.

Insert—> Header & Footer—> Page Number—> Format Page Numbers

Click on Format Page Numbers from the list displayed.

Clicking on the option will display a new window that contains information about the paging settings of the file.

In the pop up window, you can choose how to display the numbering for the first part of the document file. Just select the Number Format and click OK.

You will see that the layout format has been applied to the first part. However the numbers in the second part are followed by the first section. For example, if the number of pages of the introduction is 3 pages and the numbers of these pages are a, b and c, the first page of the second part (the main part) starts with the number 4.

To fix the problem and start the second part from number 1 (or your own number), you must also do the following.

First, click on the beginning of the first page of the second part to show the flashing word cursor.

Then select the Format Page Numbers as below.

Insert—> Header & Footer—> Page Number—>Format Page Numbers

You will see that the Page Number Format window has been opened again. This time, we will perform the settings for the second part; this setting will not affect the previous section.

From the Number Format, select the numeric value (or other value) as you like. Before clicking the Ok button, click on the Start at button and start the initial value in the Page Numbering section of the window above. The number or amount you enter in this section is allocated to the first page of the section.

Tip: remember that we were clicking at the beginning of the first page of the section.

Hence, you can create a new section(s) for Word files, and control the layout format.

Tip: If the page number does not appear in your Word file, double-click on the bottom or the top of the page to display the page as follows.

Then follow (Insert—> Page Number—> Bottom of Page—>Plain Number ) to show the numbers.
