Many beginner designers ask what is suitable graphical design software for us? Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator? The answer is not very simple. According to various options and formats of image files, selecting a file type can be a bit difficult. When working with a variety of files, compatibility and versatility are always an important issue, but in terms of graphics and images, the type of computer graphics format we are using is essential for file transfer and filing. To be honesty, two software might be useful based on your work you are going to do. One of them is raster graphics editor and the other one is vector graphics editor. Some explanations about vector and raster displayed as follows:
What is vector graphics?
Vector images, composed of small lines and curves, are based on mathematical theories. Vector graphics are constructed by computer software designed to create this complex intricate template; each line contains defined locations and locations, and the lengths of the lines and curves. Each of the lines and curves in the image can be assigned a color value. Because of this defined and formula approach, the size of each image can be determined continuously and without restriction, without loss of quality.
You can recognize it by looking at the edges of a vector image; a vector image is always smooth and uniform regardless of its size and zooming size. Text is one of the most common types of vector images. For example, no matter how much font size you have, its appearance never changes.
Another benefit of using vector images is file size efficiency. Because vector files are defined only through math descriptions, not pixels, these images are often smaller than pixel images. Therefore, it’s often easy to transfer vector images from one computer to another, or to the internet.
Some vector formats:
- Adobe Illustrator: .ai, .ait, .art
- Corel Draw: .cdr, .cdrw, .cdt
- Corel: pat (Paint Shop Pro Pattern Image)
- Digital Line Graph: .dlg, .do
- OpenOffice: .odg
One of the common problems with using vector images is versatility. Vector images are often pure files, which are made of a program, such as Adobe Illustrator, are stored.
What is raster graphics?
To raster images, bitmap images are also called because of the millions of small squares called pixels. Detecting a raster or bitmap image is determined by looking at the distance to it. If you zoom in enough, you’ll see the square lines of each pixel (especially around the edges that have a lot of color contrast).
Raster image files are usually larger than vector images. The higher DPI settings (dots per inch) and PPIs (pixels per inch) are for larger files because the software should be able to run every pixel. If the storage space or server is limited or if we want to transfer the files electronically, the file size is important. Adobe Photoshop files are based on raster.
Some raster formats:
.png (Transparent file for portable graphics in the network)
.tiff or .tif (Tag Interleave)
Now you can choose your suitable software based on type of design and format of files you decide to work with. Some advice if you are planning a professional graphic designer, you need both of these together.
